Introduction

Learn to Swim is our swimming development programme working in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), to ensure that children are taught to the highest possible standard.  In Learn to Swim we aim to develop children’s swimming skills from the earliest stages (starting at 4 years of age) to entry into the swimming club and to produce a confident and safe swimmer with a love of the water.

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming ("NPTS") offers teaching for all ages and abilities, from non-swimmers (Stage 1) through to adults and children whose swimming skills have reached entry level (Stage 7) so that they can join with local swimming clubs.

LEARN TO SWIM TRAINING PROGRAMME

The Learn to Swim section of the Club teach at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings in both the Teaching Pool and Main Pool.  Each evening has its own dedicated, qualified, volunteer teaching staff, with assistants in the water as needed. Our Learn to Swim Co-ordinator, who oversees all sessions, is responsible for allocating places for each evening.

Lessons run throughout the year except for the main school holidays and swimmers are taught in 10 week blocks of 30 minute sessions. We take swimmers from 4 years old you are taught in line with the Duckling Awards offered by the ASA, and as soon as they are 5 years old swimmers will be graded according to the NPTS scheme. A copy of the NPTS Plan is held by the Club and can be viewed by parents on a Club Night (Tuesdays) by prior request. You can also purchase the Parents Guide to NPTS from the Learn to Swim Coordinator at re-enrolment. Alternatively visit the ASA’s website at: http://www.swimming.org/parents/npts/ for more information.

Once swimmers have gained the confidence in the water and can master the basic strokes of swimming in the Teaching Pool, they are transferred to the Main Pool, still under Learn to Swim, where more training takes place to ensure that all swimmers are proficient in the basics of Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly. It is at this point that the swimmers will be invited to join the Main Swimming Club, where they can opt to swim Competitively or join the Non-Competitive section. No matter what the decision, they will continue to be taught so that their swimming improves in order that they can have the maximum benefit and enjoyment from the sport.
